Ask

My 3.5-year-old son Oliver has his first real barbershop haircut scheduled for tomorrow morning. His curly bangs are in his eyes, but he had a complete crying meltdown tonight, screaming that the buzzing clippers are a monster that will cut his ears off.
Can you tell a gentle, soothing bedtime story tonight (perhaps about a little hedgehog or puppy named Oliver whose scruffy hair gets a gentle trim while sitting safely in his dad's lap) that honestly acknowledges the weird tickly buzz, gives him a simple coping move (counting tickles, holding dad's hand), assures him his ears are completely safe, and winds down into calm sleepy breathing?

Answer

Oliver was a little hedgehog with the wildest, curliest fluff right on top of his head. It was happy fluff. But this week, it had grown long and floppy, and now it flopped right into his eyes.

"Tomorrow morning," said Daddy, "we're going to the kind chair. A friendly barber will help your fluff feel light again."

Oliver's tummy felt tight. "Daddy… will the buzzing hurt my ears?"

Daddy shook his head slow. "Never. The buzzing tool only walks on top, where the long fluff lives. Your ears stay tucked safe the whole time. I'll sit in the big chair, and you can sit right in my lap. My paws stay right here on your tummy. You can hold one whenever you want."

In the morning, the barber's chair was warm. Oliver climbed into Daddy's lap.

The buzzing tool woke up: brrrr… brrrr… brrrr.

It tickled. Like a busy little bee walking on his head.

"One," Oliver counted. "Two. Three." He squeezed Daddy's paw tight.

"Four. Five. Six." His floppy curls floated down, soft as feathers.

"Ears safe," the barber said gently. "Just a little more."

Oliver took a big breath in through his nose… and let it out slow. Pfffff.

The buzzing stopped. Oliver blinked. His head felt cool and light. He could see everything.

Walking home, the wind felt soft on his new fluff. He held Daddy's paw all the way.

At bedtime, Oliver climbed into bed. He breathed in through his nose… and slowly out. In… and out.

The pillow smelled like home. Daddy tucked the blanket around his prickles.

"Goodnight, Oliver. The bed is here. Home is here."

Oliver's eyes grew soft and slow.
