The two systems don't even share a year: BaZi year follows the **節氣** calendar (anchored to the sun's ecliptic longitude); Zi Wei's year is the **lunar** year. So the same birthday can land in a different "year" depending on which one you're asking about.

The year pillar in BaZi isn't actually the Gregorian year — it switches at **立春 (Lìchūn, "Start of Spring")**, which is the solar term when the sun reaches ecliptic longitude 315°, falling on **February 3–5** each year. Online calculators pick from (at least) three different rules:

That's the whole source of the disagreement. None of the three is "wrong" — they're different conventions. The professional standard for BaZi is **立春**, but a calculator that doesn't disclose its rule will quietly give you whichever it was coded with.

Zi Wei doesn't have this particular ambiguity (its year is the lunar year, anchored to 春节), but it has its own calendar gotchas around 闰月 (leap months) and 早晚子时 (whether the hour before midnight counts as today or tomorrow).
